Routine, soft tissue, or orthopedic, not one category
Not every surgery at Woodsprings is the same kind of visit. A routine spay or neuter is scheduled and predictable. Soft tissue surgery covers procedures on the organs and tissue rather than bone, and orthopedic surgery is the joint and bone work, including CCL repair for a torn ligament in the knee.
Dr. Lawrence separates those three from the first conversation, because the prep, the anesthesia plan, and what recovery looks like afterward are different for each one. A spay is not treated like a knee repair, and a knee repair is not treated like a routine procedure.

What in-office lab work and digital x-ray change
In-office lab work means bloodwork runs here before surgery, not at a separate lab days later, so a pre-surgical screening comes back with an answer the same visit instead of a second trip.
Digital x-ray does the same for orthopedic cases: an image is available on the spot to look at the joint or the break before deciding how to proceed. When a case needs a second read, Woodsprings has easy access to boarded veterinary radiologists through its referral network, so a harder orthopedic case is not guessed at, it's reviewed.
Chapter 03
Recovery is several visits, not one
Orthopedic recovery in particular is not a single appointment. Matt M's dog had a CCL repair and, in his words, "the staff was amazing and they took very good care of our dog through the surgery and follow up visits. After recovery she's back to her old self running and jumping around."
Spencer Elder's dog Poppy went through a spay procedure and knee surgery the same way, a process he described as "a long process that involved several visits and checkups." That is the honest shape of orthopedic recovery here. The surgery is one appointment, and the follow-up visits are what get a dog back to normal.
